Multi Menu – A Free Mega Menu Plugin for WordPress

First, download the plugin’s zip file.  Then inside of WordPress go to the Plugins section and click on Add Plugin.  Then choose the Upload Plugin option and upload the zip file you downloaded.  Once you upload the plugin, go ahead and click the Activate Plugin option to enable the plugin.

Under the Appearance > Menus section of WordPress create a new menu.  On the left hand column where you normally add pages to your menu you should see a new option called Multi Menu Settings.

If you don’t see this option, click the Screen Options tab in the upper right hand corner of your screen and enable the Multi Menu Settings option.  While you’re here, you’ll also want to make sure the Description option is enabled as well.

From the left hand menu under Multi Menu Settings, select your menu style.  Then select your options and click the Save Settings button to save your changes.  If you go back to your website you should now see the menu active in your theme.  If you don’t, be sure to clear any caches you might have.

The Multi Menu Style option determines which style of menu is loaded.  You can choose from no special menu style (which defaults to your theme’s default menu style) or a Mega Menu, Slideout Menu or Fullscreen Menu.

The Menu CSS Styles to Load box determines which styles are loaded for your menu.  Choose the Core + Light option if you’re using a light theme.  Choose the Core + Dark option if you’re using a dark colored theme.  The other options available in that box are for developers who want to customize the styles for the menu themselves without the aid of our premade styles.

The Invert Menu Toggle Color option allows you to have an inverted color scheme for the menu toggle button.  For instance, if you want the contents of the menu to have a black background but you have a light colored navigation bar, enable this option so the menu open toggle is visible with your color scheme.

The Show Menu and Close Labels option determines if the words Menu and Close are shown next to the hamburger menu icon and the close x icon.  Having these words enabled makes it easy for your visitors, especially those who are less tech savvy, to identify that the navigation is hidden behind a toggle.

The Preserve Menu ID and Class will preserve some default attributes from your theme’s default menu.  Usually you don’t need to check this, but if you have a theme and the menu isn’t working well with your theme’s styles you can try checking this to see if the styles look better.

The Load Theme Specific CSS option loads specific CSS fixes for common popular themes like Astra, Blocksy, Kadence, Neve and GeneratePress.  It is recommended that you always enable this option as if we have a premade stylesheet for your theme this option will enable it for the best visual results.

The Additional CSS classes for menu option allows you to add CSS classes for your menu.  Add each class you want to add in the box with each class separated by a space.

To add a featured image to the Mega Menu option you will need to add the featured image to the page or post that you’re adding to the menu.  Only second level pages in the mega menu can have a featured image display.  Featured images don’t work with non-post items, such as a link to another website.

First, make sure that the Description option is enabled from the Screen Options tab in the top right hand corner of your screen.  Then, in each menu item you should see a Description text field.  Simply add your description in there.

On the Mega Menu, the second level items can have a description.  On the Fullscreen Menu, first and second level items can have a description.

Yes, you can.  To do this, add a class of no-featured-images to the Additional CSS Classes box at the bottom of the form.

For a four column mega menu, add a class of four-columns to the Additional CSS box.

For a two column mega menu, add a class of two-columns to the Additional CSS box.

Yes!  Although the plugin is not currently in the official WordPress repository it will update automatically when we come out with a new release.  You can also download new releases manually from our GitHub Releases page.
