Our mini accessibility audit is a quick, affordable option for determining if your website is affected by common website accessibility issues.
Web accessibility is an often overlooked element of modern website design. Our mini-audit service is a great way to see at a glance how close your website is to meeting web accessibility standards.
Why is web accessibility important?
Web accessibility allows people of all ability levels to use your website. Some web users, for instance, may not have the fine motor skills required to use a mouse, so they need to be able to navigate your website using only a keyboard. Other users may be blind or low-vision, requiring them to use a screen reader to read the contents of your website aloud.
In the United States, website accessibility is regulated by the Americans with Disabilities Act. If your website is for a business with a physical location it is especially important that your website is accessible, as courts have ruled that a business with a physical location covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act must also make their website accessible as well. Ensuring that your website is accessible to all users will help to ensure compliance with applicable laws and limit your legal liability.
What is included in our accessibility audit?
We offer a mini accessibility audit that is designed to identify the most common accessibility issues that your website might face. We use a combination of automated and manual tools to test your website for accessibility issues.
We start by doing an automated scan of your website using the WAVE Accessibility Checker as well as the Google Pagespeed / Web Accessibility Checker to determine at a high level the issues your website may face with accessibility. With the automated tools we’re checking for the following:
- Does the website have any critical errors that might be preventing a user who is using a screen reader from browsing the website?
- Are there any issues with contrast that may prevent the website from being readable to all users?
- Do images have the proper use of alt tags to describe their contents to blind users?
- Are there any issues with headings or page structure?
- Are there any redundant or repeating links that may make navigation with a keyboard or screen reader difficult?
Automated tools, however, are not always correct and should just be used as a starting point for determining website accessibility. That’s why as a part of this service, we’ll also test your website manually using a keyboard and screen reader. When we check a website manually, we’re looking to answer the following questions:
- Can all navigation items in your site’s navigation be opened using only a keyboard?
- Are there any focus traps where a user navigating the page using only a keyboard might get stuck?
- Are links and buttons properly spoken aloud when using a screen reader?
- Are there any other elements that may be confusing to a screen reader or keyboard only user?
This two-part system ensures that common accessibility issues are caught. After our testing, we will provide a report to you notating the findings of our testing, along with any recommendations that we have as to how to solve the accessibility issues that may have been found.
